    Next series to start

We've finished all TV shows we've been watching on Neflix except Burn Notice and need to find another.

Which of the following and why?

I voted Farscape, simply because the girls are still at an age where Muppets as Aliens might be acceptable. Really, they grow on you almost immediately as people, kinda like Yoda.

Battlestar Galactica has themes and tones that're better with a little more maturity. BSG is still definitely the better series, regardless of how one feels about the ending.

Both shows have kick-ass female role models:

Farscape: Aeryn, Zhaan, even Jool and Chiana

BSG: Starbuck, Laura Roslin, though most of the other women end up with mixed results.

Heroes I wouldn't bother with past Season 2, or even season 1

Stargate I only liked in the final seasons

I assume you've already covered FIREFLY? If not, remedy at once!

How about BUFFY? Or even XENA?

Firefly we've already finished. Deeann and I have watched most of Buffy.

I tried to like Stargate but got bored with it after 30 eps or so... it's one I'll probably go back to. Also on the Family Friendly warning side the first episode (and first episode only) contains full frontal nudity. After that it's G rated.

Dale covered the high points, a few other recommendations (changes things if you are watching with the kids)

    Dr. Who (duh)
Torchwood (Who spinoff, Darker and grittier... and Gayer, but some awesome storytelling here)
Dead Like Me... Can't really fully recommend, It starts strong but gets weaker than a mixed drink at a strip club as it goes on, I found ti worth watching but I'm easily bored)
Being Human (UK) oddly interesting but it lost me in series 3ish... a bit adult... well a lot adult.

For filler shows Storage wars and Pawn Stars are fun...
Few other shows that are less kid friendly but good eating:

Breaking Bad: Single best show currently on TV
Sons of Anarchy: Second best show currently on TV.
I've conquered country, crown, and throne.

Dr Who we've done. It was first on the list. We're still watching the older Tom Baker ones. Tried Tourchwood but really didn't get into it.

I think we're going to go with BSG and then Farscape.

OMG. So this is to say that you haven't seen any of the listed shows yet? WOW. You've got a lot of good stuff ahead of you if you have any love of sci-fi. lol.

Stargate: Have you seen the Stargate movie? It's not an absolute requirement but it will definitely help you understand the backstory. Otherwise, Stargate is awesome if you watch them in order. I was introduced to the series by the odd episode over my little brother's shoulder and then a friend who liked to show me random episodes without realizing I had NO idea who the ancillary characters were. In that format I was on the fence about it. But when I watched it on Netflix from the beginning and was introduced to like... Ryac and the Tokra and the Nox in the first episode they showed up in it was engrossing. =) Series has some ups and downs, but great leads you will grow to love dearly, some really good side characters, and a whole universe of neat mythos to delve into. It's the kind of sci-fi show you could see yourself living in and being thrilled by it. And Stargate Atlantis is even better, imo, once you have a grasp on the basics of the Stargate universe.

BSG: The first season of BSG is AMAZING. The drama is gripping, the effects are awesome, the action scenes are great, and you really feel like you're on the edge of a knife with these people. Then they apparently ran out of money for 3D effects, the space fights start to go downhill in frequency and relevance, and you start seeing the same like... five shots repeated over and over again with MAYBE a different planet in the background if you get lucky, and as season 2 progresses into season 3 the show devolves into infighting and politics. EVERY single character will do something you HATE during this time, and there will be a couple episodes where you go "Really? Why am I watching these people do this to themselves?" BUT... but. It picks back up and ends really strong.

Farscape: Definitely the weirdest of the bunch. When they go down the rabbit hole, they go waaaayyyy down it. There's one episode that takes place inside Crichton's head that's all done like a Looney Toons cartoon. It's weird. lol. The production is pretty sweet on farscape and most of the aliens are like... alien. With the exception of Chiana and the peacekeepers, the aliens are distinctly not human even if bipedal, and even the ones that look human have story things that make them different from humans. I would say this show has more original episodes more often, although early on it does the Babylon 5/DS9 thing where there are a long string of episodes either all in the captain's head and/or centered on trying to figure out if he's just totally nuts or not. The characters have flaws, but they stay on the endearing side of the line rather than frustrating, and at the end of the series you want everyone's plotlines to get properly tied up because you care about all of them. Aeryn Sun kicks some serious booty, John Crichton is a respectable hero without the wit and steadfastness of Mal Reynolds, but the same my crew is my family kind of mindset, Dargo is the kind of guy you always want at your right hand, and Rygel... omg. Rygel is hilarious. Even the ship (Moya) has a personality (she's a living thing, btw), and I really like that they limited themselves by NOT making her a killy warship.

Starbuck a female role model? Bleck. It's totally awesome that she's the best fighter pilot ever, but she's a tortured, angry, alcoholic, self-abusing wreck the majority of the time she's not in a Viper.

No Supernatural? Btw everything that has been mentioned I enjoyed quite a bit. To bad Netflix doesn't have Babylon 5 as of yet (or at least I think it doesn't).

re: Farscape. The DVDs have some of the best commentary tracks of any series I've watched. Dunno if that's available streaming or not, but if so definitely check it out.
