    Re: Haven Napoleonic Group.

I have not decided on what Brigade I want to build. I have been chatting with Forrest about that. I love the Victrix for the poses and the affordability and the amount and I love the Perry's for fill in for Rank and File. I am interested in Napoleon at War but will wait til I get my 28mm up and runing as well. When you get back, we can work on Napoleon at War together.

    Re: Haven Napoleonic Group.

I have built the British 5th brigade and it is about half painted. I am constructing the KGL 2nd brigade and I have one battalion of Brunswick line infantry. The Brunswickers are Perry miniatures and I have one battalion of Perry Brits. The rest are Victrix. I still need to add some cavalry and another artillery battery or two. Currently I have Loyd's battery of two 9lbs guns and a 5.5" howitzer. I still need to get Cleeves' battery for the KGL.

    New rules aar

forgive if this is a duplicate post

wow- i think i may have found 28mm Napoleonic Nirvana--

bernie and i played Drums and Shakos Large Battles 1st time tonight-
this is a brand new game
this is an $8 PDF download- ROB if you get this in hard copy i will buy it

It is divisional with battalion units- basing is flexible- my infantry are 4 per 1.5" x 2" stand, and four of these make a battalion; cav i base three to a 2"x4" stand, 2 cav bases per regiment, arty one crew on 3"x2" (some of you may see an established basing here... and therefore a deviant from recommended basing in the rules, but very playable just the same)

    # of figures per stand is aesthetic anyway (I base light infantry 3 to a stand..)

anyway, bernie had an Anglo-Russian force (need to paint a few more of each to field separate divisions)
    Infantry Bde: 1 x Jager, 4 x Line, 1 x 12 pdr
    British Bde: 1 x Rifles, 2 x Line, 1 x Dragoon
    Cav Bde: 1 x Hussars, 1 x Dragoons, 1 x Cossacks, 1 x 6 pdr Horse
    Reserve: 1 x Grenadier, 1 x Cuirassiers, 1 x 12 pdr

    I had a French Division:
    Mixed Bde: 2 x Light, 3 x Line, 1 x Dragoons, 1 x 6 pdr Foot
    Cav Bde: 1 x Hussars, 2 x Cuirassiers,1 x 6 pdr
    Reserve: 1 x Line, 1 x Grenadier, 1 x Young Guard, 1 x 12 pdr

we played 1807 stats, so the French were as strong as they will get

and get this- we played 250 pt games with forces differentiated by the Special Rules section of DSLB- What I did is i associated factors for command, combat, response in the field, quality, and skirmish and fire combat from an established system (where nationality and temporal differences in unit function were charted across the era in a points-based system) with most of the Special Rules in DSLB; and i did this in an Excel spreadsheet that automatically creates your DSLB unit Special Rules identity from a handful of values you enter in validated drop-down cells; further more, the second page allows you to easily make tags for each unit in your OB, and each tag has all the Specials on it where required-

example: 1807 French Line are Str Det Elan Drl with C4,Q4, Sk1 (Combat, Quality, Skirmish)
STRong- they get +1d6 in Combat; DETermined- get +1d6 in Approach; Elan- one free activation if fresh (no disorder); and DRilled- can rally within 11" of enemy (these guys cost 15 pts per battalion)

if you have 1813 French Line, you get: Elan Und with C3, Q4, Sk1- UNDrilled requires 11" or not in LOS of enemy in order to rally (these guys cost 11 pts)

we can contrast this with the Russian Guard: Str Det Elan Drl with C4, Q4, Gd, Sk1 (Gd- Guard means double 5 or double 6 in activation gives you an extra action) these cost 22 pts

and then the French Old Guard are just like the Russians, but they are C6 and Q3 for 26 pts
(a greater Combat value vs enemy always gives +1d6 in Approach and in Combat; Q3 means the Guard activate on 3 or better, 2 or better if they are in command)-

of course you could buy a gazillion Russian Foot Cossacks for 4 pts per "battalion"-- these guys are Wk Wav Und Exp Mil with C2 Q5 Sk0 (WeaK- give enemy +1d6 in combat; WAVering- give enemy +1d6 during an Approach; EXPendable- only 1/2 pt taken from Division Break Point if lost- yay!!; MILitia: takes 2 activations to change formation

anyway, a nutshell: game forces player to choose to activate groups (in which case he cannot close with enemy) or individual units, allowing combat; each attempt at activation gives player choice of rolling 1, 2, or 3 die against the Q number (>= for success): every success gives an action to that Group or Unit, every failure allows an enemy unit to react; a double failure for Group or Unit ends all further actions for that brigade, move onto next brigade-

game has cool Approach then Combat mechanic- a unit that wins the approach will earn up to 2 extra actions this can allow an infantry unit to make square be fore the cav hit home, or result in a counter-charge against the attacker whose nerve failed in the Approach-- very very cool; combined arms is there for sure

overall a great first outing-- bernie and i cannot wait to try again after genghiscon

    Re: Haven Napoleonic Group.

I remember that there was some interest in the Napoleon At War rules. The link below leads to a blog which contains a NAW battle report and the author's commentary about how the rules play.

    Re: Haven Napoleonic Group.

I have the first Dutch-Belgian brigade painted in 10mm for my planned Quatre Bras refight. The 10mm figs painted up surprisingly fast and yet have enough detail to make them look good when ranked up. I'll try to get some pics posted soon.

The brigade includes the 27th Jaegers, 7th Line, 5th,7th and 8th National Militia. I am currently working of Stievenart's battery and the brigade will be complete. Then to start on the Nassau regiments to complete the 2nd Netherlands Division.
