View Full Version : Spring League - Roll Call

I want a casual roll call to see who's planning on playing.

But I want some feedback answers to some questions...which may help you decide.

1. Would you like to include Hordes in the mix?
2. Are you planning on playing across the street also?
3. Do you know who your prospective team-mates are?

And my last question comes with explanation...

It is generally my policy to allow a natural course of action when it comes to players doing the right thing. The League is supposed to be a tool to encourage participation and friendly play. Competition is there, but primarily....this should be fun. To encourage this, and address some of the minor complaints and or issues of winter season I'm going to take a slightly different approach from what has been mentioned. Give me input.

I'm thinking of changing the nature of the league fees to create a scenario where each participant (at least 1 game per week, or 6 games total played...not everyone can make it to every week, but make ups can be had) would walk away with some small modicum of a prize. The pins will still go to those who played/scored etc. the most. But also, there will be an official "meeting" after the league to give out prizes to all participants. Most likely this will be in the form of store credit...equally distributed among the players. The point being...you should all feel like your TIME playing in the league yeilded something of worth, but you should all feel like it's worth INVESTING your time in the league on some level as well.

Please throw out your comments at will. I know this last part will generate the most comment, so make sure to answer the above questions too. Do be gentle.

1. Yes, I love my Circle.
2. Maybe, but it's generally crowded over there, and I don't know most of the people.
3. No clue.

I am debating playing my Mercs once again, probably with Gorten as I feel most comfortable with him as my caster. I will let you know for sure Ryan.

I am interested in playing, while I will not be playing my Legion, I would not mind seeing them if only for variety. Thursday night is my mini's night with occational Sundays, but as far as location I care not. Teammates - well I have been out of the loop so long I have no idea who would be interested in having my Menoth army along.

2. Sure, why not.

I'm in.

I'd like to play Skorne if I can.

I don't plan to do both. I'm going to be too busy.

I'm not sure about a "self-esteem" prize for everyone. I think extra categories would be cool (like Most Persistent New Guy). But we get patches for our $$ which should be enough, and experience for our time. The pins are a bonus.

If Hordes are allowed, all I ask is if someone is fielding them, to be patient with us who have not seen them in action. I have only played Hordes once and it was with proxies.

My Hordes games don't last long enough for patience... if you're not dead by the start of turn 2, I've done something wrong!

Hehe, jk :)

1. I don't really care but if we do would rahter see them as a faction of their own. Align them with a WM faction only for the pupose of which scenarios they play. If you want to use a WM faction use them, but not either.

2. I would be available to play if I see the same. If we are going to be a inter-store league lets see it both ways.

3. Yes

I agree with Dale that the patches and possible pins are worth the league fee, store credit is always nice though.

I'd love to see a weekly "who wants to play" post as we had for the winter league and maybe include the player rankings from Sunday before the new week starts.

I have to say that I enjoyed everyone that I played and am looking forward to the spring season. I plan on losing a number of my games with the new Menoth horde!

So if I play Gorten again, what is the best faction to pair up with seeing Mercs can't be on their own?

When is this league going to be played. I dont want to insert my opinion if I cant make it to play anyway.

It will start on the 23rd and run six weeks.

Omar
04-11-2007, 10:01 PM
What I mean is... when will the games be played? I work Monday through Friday and generally cant get to the store until 7:15 or so. If its a weekday league, I am pretty much out. If its a weekend league, it depends. How many games does one need to play?

Genestealer
04-11-2007, 10:28 PM
You can play any number of games. Thursday nights people primarily play, but it is possible to catch a game any day of the week. If you managed two per week you would have more than about half of the people did in the winter season. The store stays open till 10 on Thursday nights and if you post here should be able to find games either Thursday night or on the weekend.

Omar

I have other activities that keep me busy on thursday nights, so that probably wont work. I would like to play, but I just dont know how if thats the primary night.

Thanks for the info.

LordKroeker

Omar there are a couple other people that just can't make it on Thursdays as well.

That being the case I'm fairly certain you could find games (though likely with the same usual people unless you go out of your way to ask others) with people on Saturday as well. Don't rule yourself out if you think the league might give you the incentive to jump in with both feet. A lot of players have learned "the hard way" by doing such and turned out to be very good ones to boot.

also, if you're curious about how the league rules work...

Go to www.privateerpress.com and check out the link called "A call to Arms" spring season. That will get you in the right direction to see how the league will generally be conducted.

Also, to everybody - spread the word, we'll have a meeting a week from today to communicate and finalize details. Just to give you an idea of what I'm thinking thus far.

I'm going to put hordes in the mix. First we'll align each hordes faction with a specifc Warmachine faction. So far my pairings look like this:

Cyrx/Circle
Khador/Trollbloods
Cygnar/Legion
Menoth/Skorne.

When you sign up you commit to playing a specific faction for the duration....so by way of example - although Cryx and Circle are working together, Jim (Circle) and Mark (Cryx) could potentially be on the same team but Jim is committing to playing his Circle (no Cryx) for the duration of the league, and Mark would be committing to playing his Cryx (but not Circle) for the duration. Merc rules will still apply normally - so a player can follow merc contracts appropriate to league rules and faction alignment as appropriate. Minions have no such contracts and so will follow all rules as laid out in Primal for Horde factions only (unless they're also a Merc :))

Additionally, I'm going to follow suit with Dale, and allow consecutive games between players as long as they are occurring a week apart. A sign up sheet will be posted at the haven soon. Payment will be required at time of signup.

Lastly, I have a new "personal" policy. If you think you've been treated unfairly by either another player or even myself I request...nay INSIST you bring it to me personally. I'd rather an objection be voiced to me in a private email than openly elsewhere and having anything come to me through indirect channels. I am a people pleaser and will work has hard as humanly possible to rectify the situation - whatever it is - for you.

How does this all sound? Other opinions, comments, concerns?

Fire away.

Troy - if you want to play with Gorten you can potentially play aligned with Khador, or Cygnar. recommend you take a look at your three options as far as what kind of lists you can build to determine which faction you wish to align with.

Ask tonight and we'll look at the three merc contracts Gorten works with, and then explore which models you can take with each contract. That should give you a better understanding of what you can take with him and how he'll suit your choices.

Ryan.

I presume you meant to say that "You may play consecutive games with the same opponent as long as they occur in different League Weeks." ? Right? That way, if Mark and I play on Sunday, we could play again on Monday after the new scenarios are posted, etc.
OR, did you mean exactly 7 days between them?

Are all games required to be played at the Haven? Not a prob by far, but this should be explicit if it is so, in contrast to the last League. With Castle running their own, our players looking for space on Mondays to play might cause a bit of havoc.

When do we have to pick Teams, and when is the pre-League meeting?

Other than that, I have no questions and looks good! I had expected the Hordes to be all separate Teams, but with the few numbers of Hordes players, this makes more sense.

One more question:

The League rules generally forbid proxies. With Hordes allowed, and Evo models trickling out, may we proxy those as yet unreleased, but otherwise rules-published?

As much as I'd like to throw down with Morvahna and a Pureblood, if we did that now, we'd have to do that for Warmachine in the fall league when their book comes out.

In the Hordes case, its more to pick up the "equalizing factors" that are coming in EVO, rather than just the New Toy factor. Then again, if we choose to take Hordes, we're choosing to operate at a disadvantage already. I just don't know if it needs to be THAT much of a disadvantage. ;)

Blackraine
04-12-2007, 12:15 PM
I can definitely see where you're coming from with that. While my personal experience is that Hordes wipes the floor with Warmachine at every given opportunity, I know that that's really only in my experience (and limited experience at that). A lot of Hordes players are having a hard time with cross-game battles... so I can see adding Evolution to sort of balance things out a bit. Besides, I'm hoping for a Tharn solo that lets me field extra units of Tharn so I can have 2 or 3 units of Bloodtrackers with Morvhana!

The former is correct. Keep the games separate between League weeks...no 7 days is required so much as games spaced out from league week say 2 to league week 3.

Let's say YES. Rob went to the trouble to host this as a separate event. Let's treat it as such.

When do we have to pick Teams, and when is the pre-League meeting?

Plan for our meeting to be a week from today (Thursday the..checking calendar...19th of April). I'll wait until 7pm before starting to give pleny of time for people to get done with work. If someone is planning on playing but can't make this, let me know ASAP.

Also start talking amongst yourselves for teams. I plan to nail down team names and members On April 19th as well. I also encourage some of you vets to pick out some of the newer players to add as team mates so they don't feel left out in the cold. Someone experienced for them to bounce ideas off of would be a good thing, and I'd rather not have a "noob" team at all as that can get discouraging over time.

As for new players who are reading this or interested, I'm not necessarily planning on playing for this season unless there's a HUGE need for me to. I'd rather adminstrate and be available for rules questions. If you decide the league is not for you this time, I should be available for learning games and demos on Thursday nights for all 6 weeks of this season. Also anyone who knows someone who's interested in either game, encourage them to drop by so we can meet and learn on Thursdays too.

One more question:

The League rules generally forbid proxies. With Hordes allowed, and Evo models trickling out, may we proxy those as yet unreleased, but otherwise rules-published?

I'm going to go with a big "no" on this one. Several factors come to mind.

As you stated...no proxies are allowed as stated in the rules. I know there were a couple of games during Winter CTA where it happened just because a model was on the proverbial painting table or what not, and when those things happen, no biggie to me.

When the model itself has not yet been released, I'm inclined to leave it out for fairness to players who might not otherwise have the rabid fan-dom to buy every copy of No Quarter magazine and be aware of them and their rules. Additionally, when there's a proxy of something like an epic model for the regular etc...it's an easy substitute. What does a troll player use for a winter troll? Or an everblight player for a Nephilim? There's no good solution and it would be a shame for someone to lose a game based on an assumption that a model is what it actually is, rather than a substitute. Better to avoid confusion that way and keep it kosher with the "if you have the card and model for it, you can play with it" mentality.

This I will say is the price for playing Hordes vs. Warmachine...you're already likely having some advantage due to likely scenario balance (I'd use finger quotes around that word if I could) issues but I still maintain that Hordes can be competitive without the addition of an extra warbeast or warlock.

So say we all.

I'm usually okay with it, as long as it's temporary. But you never want to make your opponent have to think too much as to whether that guy there is a Hammerfall or a Cutthroat for instance...

Omar

How much is the startup cost?

Genestealer
04-12-2007, 04:54 PM
I'm not sure but I would bet it is no more than $10. Number of people and if there will be any other prizes probably will determine the amount. The Spring season was about $8.

Omar
