Astartes Duos Sol
The Astartes Duos Sol began as the Brothers Ire Astartes, the result of geneseed augmentation to imbue aggressive traits onto the already massive warriors. This was successful and soon the Brothers Ire were winning victories where other forces of the Imperium had fallen short.
But the satisfaction of victory fell short for the Ire, and rumors of unorganized combats within the ranks were heard throughout the galaxy. In these events, companies fought companies, squad fought squads, and brothers fought against brother.
Many of the apothecarium from many legions who did not wish to see their brothers fall to their own undoing, or worse, have to administer the Emperors Peace on their own, searched the galaxy for a salvation. They found one.
A planet trapped in the gravity of a binary star system fostered a plant who’s sap could soothe the raging geneseed of the Brothers Ire. And thus by the makings of the Imperium, the Ire were assigned to bring this planet into compliance.
The assault was fitting for the legion where the fighting consisted mostly of combat with insectoid creatures of many varieties. It was discovered that a race of small but intelligent creatures also inhabited the planet. They were brought into compliance as servants of the Emperor.
The planet itself proved more difficult to master though, and the Brothers Ire were forced to live underground, learning from their new servants, waiting for the Imperial troops to arrive. The planet’s surface suffered continual harsh radiation from the opposing suns it was bound to, but one plant was able to flourish. This hard plant with deep red sap was able to absorb the suns’ light and warmth and grow roots miles deep where underground waters are accessible. The inhabitants, new and old, used these roots to survive.
The Ire would continue to live underground and feed off the roots in addition to their normal rations, taking missions to the surface to train and keep communication with their chapter brothers. While doing this, a change in their temperament began to settle in. Convinced that the Brothers Ire had been sufficiently calmed, Chapters and Chapter masters came to the planet and a great and confidential meeting took place. When the Chapter masters emerged, the Brothers Ire Astartes we no more and the Astartes Duos Sol were forged.
So as not to lose their ferocity which made them a powerful weapon of the Emperor, the Astartes Duos Sol will send entire companies out to space on voyages known as “Battle Irings.” Here they will be weaned off the gene-soothing effects of the indigenous plant life and once again embody the rage thy once knew.
The two suns of their home-world are represented by the yellow on the wings of the eagle. The plants which brought temperament to their geneseed is seen in the cuts of red in their armor. And so they won’t forget the existence of their troubled soul, each Dous Sol has his Company designation displayed on his left shoulder with the blood of one of his fellow Astartes.
Magma Legion
Some scholars speculate that the Magma Legion space marines are the result of a First Founding Chapter's long forgotten garrison left behind during the great crusades. Others believe the chapter to have been a secret force set up by the Emperor himself. No one knows for sure when or by whom the Magma legion was founded as their records only date back five thousand years. Before which all knowledge, accounts and records of the chapter's history have been destroyed for reasons unknown. Nor does anyone claim to know by whom these records were destroyed either. Several members of the Inquisiton have lead investigations into the background of the chapter only to come up empty handed or simply go missing alltogether.
Though the chapter has obviously been around for far more the five thousand years, imperial forces only made contact with them for the first time some two thousand years ago. It was durring a campaign near the Ghoul Stars, past the blood moons of Thex Prime that contact was made with the long lost chapter. A Brothers Omega chapter strike force had been chasing down the remnants of a traitor legion known as the Penetrators. The Brothers Omega arrived only to find that the Penetrators had been completely destroyed by the Magma Legion and communicatons with the lost chapter were soon established.
Brother Captain Antarius of the third company, Brothers Omega was very surprised to find these other Astartes out so far out from all known imperial segmentums. He came very close launching an assault against the Magma Legion believing them to be traitors as well. Though most of the legion's equipment and technology predated the Horus Heresy, this would have been a grave mistake as the legion numbered more than eight thousand marines strong at the time.
The Magma Legion have since come to accept the Codex Astartes and have several succesor chapters of their own. The Magma Brothers and Magma Warriors are two such chapters. Their armour is painted in a scheme familiar to the surface of thier home planet of Agvrrax 3 alpha. The planet is fairly young and constantly teeming with volcanic activity. The prefered weapon of any Magma Legion space marine is a flame thrower of anykind."The Larger the flame, the better to cleanse the enemies of the Emperor with".
The Psalm of Darkness Chapter of the Adeptus Astartes
History
The Psalm of Darkness was formerly part of theWord Bearers chapter. They did not join their primarch when he turned to Chaos. The Psalm did not stop and await orders along with the rest of the legion when Lorgar went into mourning. They couldn’t, for they had been lost in the warp. They reappeared from the warp about a millennium after Horus’ defeat. They were shocked and outraged at what had become of their brothers. It was unthinkable to turn away from the Emperor. After passing inquisitorial scrutiny, the Psalm of Darkness became a chapter on its own. Since that time, the Psalm of Darkness has resumed spreading the Imperial faith throughout the universe, bringing death to all who will not bow down and worship the Emperor for the god he is.
Appearance
The Psalm of Darkness retains the pre-Heresy black color scheme with white squad markings and red weapons. The flames in the pre-Heresy markings have all been removed.
Home World
The Psalm of Darkness has no home world. The chapter’s single Battle Barge serves as their homeworld. They recruit potential acolytes from worlds they visit on their missions to spread the Emperor’s word.
Combat Doctrine
For the most part, the Psalm of Darkness follows the Codex Astartes. The Psalm prefers to face their enemies up close and personal, eschewing the use of raiding tactics except in support of full strength assaults or as bait to draw out an enemy for a confrontation. To this end, they use fewer bikes and landspeeders than other chapters.
Organization
The Psalm of Darkness is organized somewhat differently from a Codex chapter. Because of its small size, there are no reserve companies, and the veterans, scouts, and many of the armoured vehicles have been integrated into the four line companies. Most of their equipment is old and outdated, but they have more than enough of it to support their needs.
Beliefs
The marines of the Psalm of Darkness are as fanatical in their worship of the Emperor as their traitor brothers are in their worship of Chaos. Every Psalmist is a missionary of death—those who will not worship the Emperor must be destroyed.
Gene-Seed
Once the Psalm passed Inquisitorial scrutiny and became a chapter on its own, the existing samples of untainted gene-seed the company had carried with it into the warp were mixed with that of the Ultramarines to stabilize it. This was perhaps a somewhat ironic choice, especially considering that the Ultramarines were the Word Bearers’ most hated foe during the Heresy.
Battle Prayer
“In the name of the Emperor, impure souls of the unclean shall be banished unto eternal damnation.”
SOL INVICTUS: THE UNCONQUERED SUN CHAPTER (by Edward Barach)
History: The origin of the Sol Invictus, or Unconquered Sun Chapter, is lost in the depths of time. It is commonly believed to be a Third Founding Ultramarines successor. The chapter’s darkest hour came early in M34 while vainly attempting to defend the planet Emesa (perhaps its original homeworld) from elements of Abbadon’s Fourth Black Crusade. The chapter was saved from destruction only by a chance meteorite strike that obliterated the base camp of its foes. From the crater were recovered the Black Stones which have been revered since that day. By tradition, only 44 marines survived Emesa. To rebuild his chapter in a place that had few suitable recruits, Chapter Master Elagabalus directed his apothecaries to clone the surviving battle brothers many times over. In those days a veteran might find himself leading a squad composed entirely of his own clone-sons. As the chapter has pursued its crusade across the galaxy, this practice is still used to keep its numbers up. During the Age of Apostasy in M36, Sol Invictus was led by its renowned Chapter Master Aurelian to oppose the bloody excesses of Ecclesiarch Vandire. It took part in many battles against his forces, including the Second Siege of Terra. These dark times profoundly affected the chapter. While still loyal to the Emperor’s vision of a united humanity, it has never since obeyed the dictates of the High Lords of Terra. Most of the chapter’s recent battles have been against Tau, Eldar, Orks, and Tyranids. Its independent attitude has sometimes brought it into conflict with other Space Marine chapters and with the Imperial Inquisition. The current Chapter Master is Aurelian Septimus.
Homeworld: Sol Invictus is a crusading chapter, with no set homeworld. Its chapter fleet typically draws recruits from one or more feral worlds near its area of operations. When it is necessary for the fleet to move quickly, the chapter still creates and inducts clone-sons of its battle brothers. Sol Invictus is currently active in the Galactic East, between the Tau Empire and a tendril of the Tyranid Hive Fleet Leviathan.
Combat Doctrine: Sol Invictus favors a combined arms approach to combat, utilizing tactical, assault and devastator squads in concert. They typically deploy as a company or a half-company in either a complement of Rhinos or in a rain of drop pods. The Chapter’s leaders use intelligence gathered from their scouts to craft their battle plans. Though these plans are often comprehensive and detailed, officers are encouraged to take initiative and adapt to changing conditions. Above all, Sol Invictus Marines are disciplined soldiers who avoid rash acts to gain personal glory. They are capable of strategic withdrawls and clever tactics, viewing the practices of unsubtle, glory-hungry, frenzied, honor-bound, or stubborn chapters as less effective. They are somewhat obsessive about the quality and upkeep of their equipment. As soon as reasonable after every battle they make a point of repairing, cleaning, and repainting their armor, weapons, and vehicles.
Organization: The Sol Invictus Chapter closely follows the organization, markings, and tactics as set down in the Codex Astartes. Their fleet consists of two battle barges and at least ten strike cruisers.
Symbolism: The chapter’s armor is colored sky-blue with a squad designation on the right shoulder pad and a radiant sun symbol on the left, both in company colors.
Beliefs: The original Sol Invictus Marines came from a long-forgotten feral world near the Eye of Terror. This was a culture accustomed to long struggles against impossible odds. The Emperor was seen by them as an embodiment of the eternal, unchanging sun, the ultimate source of light, truth, purity, and justice. From this belief system developed a disciplined warrior cult. Though as Space Marines they no longer worship the Emperor as a god, these ideals still dominate their thought. They see themselves as protectors of Humanity, and will do their utmost to minimize civilian casualties in any conflict. The most revered objects in the chapter are the Black Stones of Emesa, which are held by the chaplains of each company. The chapter’s apothecaries still occasionally create clone-sons of worthy individuals, and this is seen as a great honor. It is said that the clone-father lives on in the clone-son, and sometimes they are treated as the same person. The chapter tends to be mistrustful of other Imperial organizations.
Geneseed: The Sol Invictus Marines possess the full complement of Space Marine organs with no known mutations or impairments. Their geneseed most likely descends from the Ultramarines.
Battlecry: “Sol Invictus!” and “Pius, Felix, Invictus!” (meaning “Dutiful, Fortunate, Unconquered!”)
