Please let me know :)
I am pretty much L5R-less around here in Korea but, I miss my cards!

Arigato gosaimasu!
Much appreciated gentlemen!
I'm very much looking forward to them :)
How are things going locally for L5R there?
Any hype generated for the boardgame?
How are things shaking out for the clans there?
Respectfully,

Our core of players is still active and we've got a few new ones. Lolepops/Bob is an up-and-coming Crane (from Dragon). And the boys have two friends playing, too (sorry, dunno their names yet).
Sanger has a decidely disgusting Lion deck. No longer can he whine about Lion sucking (and your game against Turlough on Halloween night doesn't count, you got gold hosed... had you a typical Sanger start you would've mopped the table with him...). I'm running a Scorpion Enlightenment deck, which is going through growing pains but I'm getting the hang of it. Charles is the typical Dragon Domination, Max right behind with Go Go Pretty Ponies. The boys have all sorts of decks: Big Mike has a great Dragon Enlightenment, Chris is working on a Scorpion deck, Cole is bouncing betwen Crane and Scorpion.
Haven't seen the board game yet, so no clue.

You've got to play on the 8th, Dale. It's a tournament format. Kevin Kim is getting his because, well, he's stationed in Korea. Charbles - can we give Kevin all the Byes (like Brandon von Frankfurter...)?

Oh well - I have a MonPoc Tourney scheduled during the day, and either Exalted or WWWN in the evening. Otherwise, this might've been my excuse to get back into the game a bit - not having to start collecting from scratch and all.
Funny though, my little postcard from AEG about the gift doesn't say anything about having to play in the Tourney...
umbraedominus

my little packet from aeg that came with the set says you need to be a current player or after the tourney you can buy a starter deck and recieve one while supplies last

There's always a catch...
I can't get the cards if I don't play...but I don't have the cards I'd need to play... but if I can't get them, I can't play....but they want me to play, which is why they're giving out the cards....but ... I... <fizzle sounds><smoking ears> Norman! Coordinate!

so you're defining current player as someone who plays in the tourney? Just curious, as my postcard merely says to stop by the store on Nov 8-9 to receive part 1 of the set. It says nothing about having to play in the tourney, or anything else.
My assumption was any IA member could pick up the set from their affiliated dojo store.

the website says you can get them buy buying starter decks after the Global storyline abd in the kit that came with the set, it says im to give one to each person who attends the event, and it defines current players as those actively playing, it says in the thing not to give it out to everyone who walks in
i have sixty of them so its not like im not going to make sure everyone who needs one is not going to get one and when we run out rob can order more from AEG to have some onhand for new players

and i have just been informed of the pre release dates for the next set
i can run the event (i will have a poll for type of event)
we can do the pre release the 10th or the 17th and we can do it day or night
i will be taking your input and majority wins
and of the street date for it
is january 19

I, too, have such a card. Yet I notice mine mentions a "global event" on the 8th to get the cards, ie: TOURNEY. As does the website under "The Imperial Gift." If it were to IA members, they would've sent it either directly to us, -OR- have them at our "stronghold store" for us to pick up like the Clan Upgrades.
You want them, then participate. OR wait for after the weekend and buy a starter, per the guidelines as set forth by AEG. It's no big secret conspiracy.
EDIT:
Here's a copy of the email AEG just sent me today (11/06/08)
"The Imperial Gift – Almost Here!

Still refers to an event, thus participation of some sort beyond "walk in and get free loot"...

Event does not necessarily mean tourney.
Release of a free set would be a pretty cool event in and of itself.
A demo day could be an event.
A gaggle of nekkid gamers prancing around the storefront with plastic katanas and shouting BANZAI at passing cars while flapping their ketchup-and-wasabe-crusted private bits about could very well be considered an event.
The postcard I received did not specify. Given the possibilities, I suppose I'm happy it's just a tourney.
However the website does explain it further: http://www.l5r.com/products/the-imperial-gift/
Dale, I get from reading the site that the set will be "massively overprinted." If and when you do decide to buy a deck at some point it should still be available.

Charles,
Thanks again for running another great tourney. I had a blast, learned new things and came away with another great feeling of our play group and you as the leader of it.
Senger, congrats on your win...that was a heck of a deck you rolled out.
So thank you Charles and thank you Troy and Rob for letting us play.

So it would be acceptable as an individual returning to L5R after a several year hiatus to walk in, purchase Spider Starter, and walk out with the IG cards? If not, what are the requirements I would have to go through. I understand that some individuals may see this as card hawking, however, I will be a regular once I get my wife out to Colorado Springs and we get set up. Moving tends to throw a wrench into the whole up and moving thing.
Asandiril
01-19-2009, 08:49 PM
Nope, that's the way it works: buy a starter and get a free set of Imperial Gift #1. The other two sets come out later this year, with Kotei and the championships (?).
Welcome to the 'Springs, Wakachow! Hope to face you across the table with my Scorpion some day, misguided Spider...

Greetings and Welcome to Colorado Springs,
I hope that we at the Haven can help you as you progress (and hopefully show you the true path oh misguided one).
Over the past about 5 to 6 months, I have learned many things from the players here. They are a very knowledgeable group of people and are almost always willing to help you improve your deck. I currently am wanting to make a Kotei competitive deck, even if I am not able to attend any events.
We have a great sample of all the clans also. Everyone tries to be as knowledgeable in their clan as possible. So I hope you enjoy our company and find your path to victory.
Bob.

I think all clans are represented in our group
Crab-Check
Crane-check
Dragon-check
Lion-check
Mantis-check
Phoenix-check
Unicorn-check
Spider-check
ok yep at least 1 player plays each clan either as a primary or a backup

My good friend Leon Phillips has suggested to me that I buy as little Samurai stuff as possible to gear for Celestial Edition. This means I won't be running amok attempting to purchase every card I lay my hands on. I will most likely ask someone to borrow a deck so I can get a feel for the environment, and then use my cerebral powers to create a deck in my mind and go hunting for singles. Any help with such an endeavor would be wonderful.
Asandiril
01-20-2009, 05:49 PM
You're getting into this at the best time, then. The last release (The Glory of the Empire) and the next are the two "phase in" sets for cross-arc cards, that being the end of Samurai and the beginning of Celestial. The Imperial Gift is also part of that phase in. Celestial will see a lot of Samurai (and earlier arcs) reprints, so you really don't need to go crazy on Samurai. A starter would be good to get you used to the game, and then boosters from GoE and the next set, with Imp' Gift, will get you headed in the right direction.
Don't take everything most of us will say about Spider too seriously. Game story-wise they just got the major shiv in the back, as the new Empress is Dragon Clan and made it known the Spider "Clan" is to be hunted and destroyed (which my Scorpion will be all too glad to do... WE control the shadows, not some 2nd class Shadowlands rejects... :D ). They are nasty, though, being able to run the big force game -or- dishonor (which used to be my Clan's providence).
Bob (lolepops) and Travis (buckeye) pointed out the true gist, we've got good representation of all Clans, so everyone can help anyone. And while most of us focus solely on one Clan, some have a side Clan/faction for S&Gs (me, I play Goblins/Shadowlands, mainly for the hilarity and annoyance factor). And just about everyone is willing to lend out their decks for trial plays, so don't feel shy about asking if you can play another faction to try them out.
Again, welcome Wakachow-san. May your stay here be full of very interesting times.
