View Full Version : Naval Miniatures Battles (Axis & Allies Naval Miniatures & Victory At Sea)

Ladies & Gentlemen:
As Tony and I discovered (and appearantly, Forrest the day prior), the newly released Axis & Allies Naval Miniatures are pretty damn nice! Tony and I basically cleaned out the store today as we searched for the elusive Japanese Battlecruiser YAMATO. (By the way, we never pulled it. So far, that and the German Battlecruiser ADMIRAL GRAF SPEE are still MIA. Although, I did manage to pull 2 USS IOWA's and 2 BISMARKs in the process!).
Anyway, the great things about these miniatures are they are prepainted and look great! I also purchased the "Victory At Sea" ruleset and will devour those within the week.
Is there anyone else interested in collecting/trading/playing?
So far, I'm committed to playing a Japanese fleet and a German fleet as well.
I hope to get replies soon!
Good luck and Good Hunting!
Respectfully,
KEVIN
P.S. And a HUGE thanks to Troy for helping me empty my wallet by turning me on to this and also translating his "special" powers to the Booster Boxes which garnered my 2 BISMARKs, 2 USS IOWAs and loads of great Japanese ships including the AKAGI aircraft carrier!

I too would like to pick these rules up and start the Naval Collecting. I would like to play the British.
Thanks to Tony and Kevin for making the first hour at the store on Sunday very entertaining! ; ) Glad I could help out guys.
I am very intrested, could you guys post a link to the website, so i can check it out?

I don't have a link for them but they are produced by Wizards of the Coast under the Axis & Allies line of miniatures.
If you google Wizards of the Coast you should find it easily under their War at Sea game.
i hope this helps and welcome aboard!

I'm gunning for some British ships. Y'all need to leave some packs around for the rest of us to buy some time.

Well heck, with so many folks wanting to play British and German, would anyone be willing to trade their US ships for my British and Geman stuff?

I might have a few American ships for trade in exchange for any German or Japanese you are willing to part with :)

Looks interesting. I'd love to get into this! Probably Geramns and Italians (love the look of the Vittorio Veneto:D )
if I got into it. How difficult/complicated are the rules?
-Josh
livingancestor
03-21-2007, 09:08 AM
I haven't looked at the A&A rules yet. Thjey're probably pretty simple.
Mongoose's Victory at Sea looks moderately difficult. They are a variant of their Bab 5 rules, which is a great ruleset.
Tony has a ruleset he wants to try out (can't remember the name), but he says they are pretty complete, but simple.
I'm not sure what ruleset everyone will decide on.

Josh,
Just to let you know, There isn't an Italian fleet per se. Right now, there are Germans (with Italian), Japanese, US and British (with French). If you were to use the Victory at Sea (Vas) rules, you could run an Italian fleet, but if you use the A&A ships, you would have to proxy most of the ships.
Wraith
03-21-2007, 11:42 AM
True, but there are still models for Italian ships, including the Vittorio Veneto.

Several of us have been talking about the various rulesets available for Naval miniatures games.
1. War at Sea - the Axis & Allies rules that come with the miniatures
2. Victory at Sea by Mongoose Publishing
3. Battle Wagon - an out of print, but simple ruleset that Tony has, and potentially can copy.
Right now for me, the choice will be either Victory at Sea or Battle Wagon. War at Sea is too closely tied to the rarity of the ships. Rare means better, as with all collectible games.
The other two rulesets allow you to use any ship type (cruiser, destroyer, etc) , regardless of its rarity and call it anything you want. The quality of the ship/crew is determined by the game mechanics and fleet lists, not by the symbol on the bottom.
I am trying out BW with Tony on Tuesday ,and then picking up a copy of VaS on Wednesday, and will make my choice from there.
Do any of you other potential players have any thoughts about this? It would be good if we could all decide on, and play, the same ruleset. It would be a shame if we have all waited for affordable and readily available naval minis to come out and miss out on playing together as a group because we are broken into small groups by several different rulesets.
ColGreeley
03-26-2007, 09:57 AM
I would go with VICTORY at SEA. I know that Kevin and Stevie have already picked it up. I am curious to see what they play like.
I have played Battle Wagon and it is fun. And now with minis, it will only be better.
Wraith

I think Victory at Sea or Battlewagon would be better.

Thanks for the game of Victory At Sea on Thursday evening.
I was surprised by how simple the rules played and how quickly we finished a skirmish!
I am very impressed with the ease of play of the ruleset and just how satisfying only 5 points of Patrol Priority played.
I'm really looking forward to playing more games of VaS in the near future.
Of course, I'm going to have to get more Zeros!

So I take it the Victory at Sea rules are pretty quick to learn and easy to play? How long was the game?
-Josh
livingancestor
04-06-2007, 07:35 AM
The game was a "Patrol" priority level (the lowest) game. I had 3 American Destroyers and 2 units of planes. Kevin had 2 Japanese Destroyers and 3 units of planes. Even with looking up a lot of rules, the game took about 30 to 40 minutes. When we have charts made up and know the rules, I bet that level of game could have been done in 20 minutes.
The rules are simple and intuitive. There wasn't any "Gee, I wonder why they did it that way". Only one question arose from the game that we couldn't find a rule for. What order do Dogfights with more than two plane happen in?
For the first game, probably a 7 on the fun scale. :D
Kevin, your opinion?
Wraith
04-06-2007, 07:50 AM
Wow. If the games are that quick and easy, this would be a great game to try and get people into here at the Academy. I'll have to try and do some recruiting;)

The more the merrier I say.
If you have a large enough potential player pool, you could each pick up a 2 or 3 boosters, choose a nationality you would like to play and swap amongst yourselves to get the ship/planes you want. A fairly cheap way of getting into the game.
Wraith
04-06-2007, 12:52 PM

Forrest, et. al:
Yes, I would rate the Patrol game we had last night on a scale of 10 as about a 7 as well. I think that once we get more accustomed to the rules games will fly at break neck speed. I'm really looking forward to getting a campaign together sometime soon.
Even with the small engagement we had the game was immense fun. Next time, I'm hoping we can start playing middle-of-the-road Priority Level (like "RAID") so we can choose to take a wide variety of options at around the 10 point range.
Mmmmmm... more Zeros!
The excellent thing about the Victory At Sea ruleset is that they have just enough special rules and traits that it makes individual vessels realistic enough to play. Also, everything about the rules is simple and makes sense so once you learn a rule you are much more apt to remember them.
After last night's game with Forrest, I ws so inspired by the gameplay that I read a lot more of the rulebook to answer the few questions we did have. I'm amazed by how addicting this game has been for me in the last couple of weeks and the fact that the ships are pre-painted gives me so much more time to actually play and enjoy the game!
And now I can't wait for the expansion of Axis & Allies: War At Sea so I can get my hands on some more of the Imperial Japanese Navy 's finest!
Respectfully,
KEVIN
P.S. Forrest, believe it or not, there is a Japanese plane that has a +5 Dogfight value, the N1K1-Shinden! I just have to wait until 1943 to field them.

I am amassing a decent amount of A&A WAS. I am looking to try out Victory at Sea and the A&A WAS rules also.
How many points in both systems does everyone use?
livingancestor
04-06-2007, 10:07 PM
VaS isn't a point based system. It uses priority levels. Basically, the level of the conflict/game. Each ship is given a Priority level of its own. Simplified, if you play a "Patrol" level game, You may use Patrol level units. Obviously, there is more to it, but that's the quick and dirty.

And that's cold, Evo. I already called dibbs on your second Scharny. :-(

The end of the school year is fast approaching, and after the 19th of May I will have a good deal of time to waste (aka dead week). Anyone want to set up a game or two of VaS for sometime that week?

How active are you guys at still playing this and did the group as whole pretty much decided on the VaS rule set?
I keep looking at the little ships at the store every time I come in, and it looks cool. Anyone want to run through a Demo game some time?

According to Troy, Mongoose recently published a new expansion book for the "Victory at Sea" World War II Naval Miniatures Game. The Gamer's Haven had a copy of it but, appears to have sold out of it.
With that being said, is there anyone interested in getting some games of this excellent game together again?
Forrest? Troy?
I'm open to suggestions/recommendations.

Great! I'm sure that Forrest will want to join in as well and there were also several other people who were already interested in playing... I believe Josh from USAFA was getting into it. Anyway, I'll have to start bringing in my fleets and books and hopefully we can get a night set for playing.

So, I've decided to finally address both my naval warfare longing and my sad lack of any real historical minis involvement in one fell stroke. A few questions before I dive in:
Is anyone still playing any of these games? I'm leaning toward Victory at Sea simply because its ruleset is based on Call to Arms - less learning curve for me. If another rules set is dominant, though, I could easily be persuaded to switch.
What minis lines do people recommend? are the Axis & Allies figs still available?
MB
PS - I'm leaning towards WW2 Americans and/or Japanese. I wouldn't say no to a German fleet either.

The store has a bunch of boxes of the A&A naval game expansion, but I haven't seen anyone actually play a game of that or Victory at Sea in a good long while.

Gentlemen:
I HIGHLY recommend using the Axis & Allies ship miniatures in conjunction with the Victory at Sea ruleset!
Forrest, Troy and I are huge fans of the game and its ease of play is simple and very fun to play :)
I really miss playing...
By the way, were there any interesting developments for the Japanese fleet in the Axis & Allies naval expansion?

My name is David I got lots of 1:2400 warships from WW2 and some WW1. I been playing Victory at sea and made some changes where it might work better. I would be willing to play a game with some one. I got lots of warships just let me know when the nexted game is.

Gentlemen:
I would love to get a few more games of Victory at Sea going at the Haven sometime soon. Personally, I enjoy the simplicity and flow of the rules system presented in the main rule book. Now with the Task Force expansion now widely available from the Axis and Allies miniatures game and the Victory at Sea expansion ruleset published for several months as well, I believe the time is ripe get a few games under our belt.
Respectfully,
KEVIN

Let me know when the nexted game will be. My best times to get together is on Friday thru Sunday, I work nights. The only warships I have are in 1:2400 but I have a lot of them so I can run big games or small games with denfrent fleets.

Long time since the last post, but if you guys are playing Victory at Sea still I'd like to check it out. I played at GenCon for part of a session after some noob walked off in the middle. A long time ago I played a 1:700 variant with home rules at Pentacon, and was smitten.
Getting people to commit to playing games like this seems to take some effort, however, so I haven't bought any of the miniatures.
I actually have the old Fletcher Pratt Naval Wargame rules too. Got them from a friend of mine who said he'd never get a game together again. Seems he was right. ;)

For awhile there, Forrest, Troy, Tony and I were pretty actively involved in Victory at Sea and purchased a significant amount of the Axis & Allies War at Sea miniatures that were released at about the same time as well... It is a very easy and fluid game system and is a load of fun to play.
I'm sure, Forrest, Troy and I would be interested in playing again... a couple of other expansions have been released since then as well as expansions for the Axis & Allies naval miniatures.
Respectfully,
KEVIN

I saw Victory at Sea 2.0 at Gencon, almost picked it up, but the price was... $55 I think. Didn't want to throw that down on a game I wasn't sure I would get to play. If you guys do get together, though, send me an email.
BTW, I was AF too. Spent a remote at Thule AB Greenland, which secured my position as a one time enlistee.

It is a good and easy rule set to learn I also made some house rules that I think make it play better. I'm a meber of CSGA here in town and play tested it a lot to where we think it might play a little better. I wont be at gamer haven this weekend but next weekend I should be there on sunday at noon I'm in the Flames of war group also.
