Stu:
Normally, I'm a GM, but I sometimes enjoy playing if the stars are right . . .
I tend to enjoy grittier, low-power games, simply because those tend to make more sense to me. When I play a wizard or a cyborg or a superhero, some awesome, creative use of my power always occurs to me in the car on the way home after that situation has been resolved. Exasperating!
I most enjoy Victorian sci-fi/fantasy, because I love to say things like "Great Scott, Baron! You're white as a ghost, and the Immelmann shrouds on your steambot have been shorn completely away! A scoche of brandy to steady your nerves and pray tell us what has happened," and I so rarely get the opportunity in daily conversation.
I like exotic fantasy and fairly crunchy-hard science fiction. I like horror games, with Call of Cthulhu being a particular favorite. I like mo-dern fearie tales (I refuse to call it "urban fantasy") and Chinese fantasy. I love pulpy stuff, as different as it may be from the other things I've mentioned. "No time for love, Dr. Jones!"
Now--
I'm going to tell you guys this. But you have to swear . . . an inviolable oath . . . that you will never, ever tell another living soul . . .
I've played Albeda, TMNT, Furry Outlaws, Furry Pirates, Ironclaw, and Jadeclaw . . . and I liked them. There! I said it! I'm a closet furry. I'm sure it's some wierd, deep-seated flaw in my character. But there it is. That's what we're stuck with.
Let us never speak of this again. Unless . . .y'know . . . you wanna run something.
Recent talk of Twilight 2000 and The Morrow Project has made me want to go post-nuclear again.
Like most of us, I have a job and the Heir To The Empire to consider when accepting assignments. And I'm usually working on something to run. So I am pretty infrequently available. But I would hate to miss a wonderful, unusual opportunity because no one knew I was interested. :)

Hi.
My name is KEVIN and I am a recovering RPG gamer. :)
Anyway, I would like to get in on an RPG as a player for now and see how things go.
My favorite RPGs to participate in to date are...
Star Trek (back in its FASA days...)
Twilight 2000
Shadowrun
Legend of the Five Rings (D10)
Vampire: Dark Ages
I have not played in any newer game systems for quite awhile.. it's been about 5 years now, I believe. But, I am open to learning.
Also, just in case it matters... I am soon to be 36 years old (my birthday is later this month so please feel free to wish me a Happy Birthday! :)). And I am married and have 4 children with an active duty career in the Air Force.
Well there you have it...
Let me know if you need me...
Respectfully,
KEVIN

Damian:
Thanks for the welcome!
I spent 3 years as a Marine Infantry Rifleman before returning to college (FIGHT ON TROJANS!) and earning my degree and commission as an Air Force officer (hence the username/screenname).
And, YES, I am extremely interested in participating in newer games.
Just let me know the particulars and I'll be happy to join in.
Respectfully,
KEVIN

Actually I am glad you are up for some Role-playing. I would love to GM, haven't done it for a few months would love to get back into it. I was able to play in a too short WFRP session, and I was able to GM a Mechwarrior/Battletech campaign. Right now I am playing Battletech every other Sunday (no RPing just the wargame), but I would like to GM or even play in a good RPG campaign. As I've said before my interests right now to GM is WFRP (dark, gritty fantasy), Jovian Chronicles (more grey than dark, semi-realistic sci-fi), and Lord of the Rings (once I can nail down those Decipher CODA rules). As for a player I would play anything (even d20), as long I can find a good coherent group.
Right now I am looking for a good generic system for most of my fantasy (Forgotten Realms, Dark Sun, Dragonlance, Eberron, Greyhawk, Birthright) and sci-fi (Dune, Traveller, Warhammer 40K) settings. Right now its a toss up between Burning Wheel/Burning Empires (very elegant, but a bit intensive, requires a good deal of player/GM commitment, lot a conversion work) and Fuzion/Interlock (good solid system, easy to pick up, good for pick-up/one-off games, moderate conversion work) If I can find a good generic system for all of them I would play short/one-off games with those.

Ravenclaw:
I've heard alot of good things about the Warhammer Fantasy Role Playing Game although, I am not an avid player of WHFB and don't know as much about the Fantasy background for WH as I should. My primary knowledge in GW is about the 40K universe. BTW, Black Publishing is developing a WH 40K RPG called "Dark Heresy" that was initially suppose to release this month but, is now rescheduled to release in February 2008.
Anyway, let me know what you would like to do and when.
i might even get my wife involved!

I am Dale. I will be 40 next month.
I enjoy most of what Stu posted, except I like high-powered games too, especially when running them. The baddies just have to get kicked up a notch, and the improv demands are more luxuriantly challenging.
I have played Albedo, TMNT, and the classic OTHER SUNS. But not that other furry stuff.
Pull out ANY list of main published RPGs between 1980 and 1995, and I've probably played them. I've sold off far more than I still own. You can tell many things from the following lists:
All the RPGS I still own:
Basic D&D - Original Color Dragon Box set. plus 2nd Run Blue set
AD&D - all my original books, some key original adventures and RPGA adventures (1st four). I also have the way OOP Deities and DemiGods, with Elric and Cthulhu, etc.
Paranoia, early 90's
Lace and Steel
TORG - almost all of it
Renegade Legion - Books and RPG stuff
Mechwarrior RPG - 1st edition with the Clans in it.
GURPS: Horror (1st) Cyberpunk, Cybercthulhu, Cyberworld, Prisoner, Supers, Conan, Wild Cards, Horseclans, and Deadlands.
1st and 2nd Edition L5R
7th Sea - all of it while at Alderac
FASA's STar Trek the RPG, including 2 editions of THE KLINGONS
Original WHFRP
Buffy TVS RPG
Serenity
COC 5th Ed
STORMBRINGER box set and supplements
1st Edition SHADOWRUN, signed by authors
VILLAINS AND VIGILANTES
MARVEL SUPER HEROES 1ST, with all Character Updates
Various CHAMPIONS products goining back to the original STRONGHOLD
New D&D stuff
DRAGONSTAR
BAbylon5
THE FANTASY TRIP Original little box sets
SHADORUN 4TH ED (love it)
Iron Kingdoms D20
EXALTED 2nd ed and 1st
VAMPIRE DARK AGES 1st and 2nd, WEREWOLF 1ST, and various WW supplements and products.
DARK SUN products
TRAVELLER 1st Box set
GAMMA WORLD 1st Edition
RPGS I wish I still had:
DR WHO
VAMPIRE 2nd ed, MAGE 1st Ed
ICE's Middle Earth
JUDGE DREDD
STAR FRONTIERS
WEG's STAR WARS
TMNT
RUNEQUEST
WARHAMMER QUEST
DC HEROES
SPACE 1889
TUNNELS AND TROLLS
CHAINMAIL
DRAGONLANCE
TOP SECRET
and 'TOON!
I'm available mostly on Fridays or Saturdays, though I may have to wait til another RPG group finishes. I can occasionally do a bi-weekly weekday. No Sundays.
I like to either play the Nerd, the Brick, the implacabale Fist of Justice, or a cross-gender bad girl. My last fun characters have been:
--Female psycho Street Samurai in Shadowrun, ala the girl in Transporter 2
--A Fat Eunuch Demon Hunter, wrestler, and opera star (Exalted Twilight Caste)
--A Fat Gambler and Medic and Con Artiste aboard a Firefly class transport
--A female enforcer gang member in the Iron Kingdom's Five Fingers, who hides her part-blighted Satyxis heritage using ancient artifacts. Yes, its "Hellgirl".
My favorite all time Hero Game character was a Hank McCoy like brick, named BRUTE. His glorious moment was nearly killing Grond with a River Barge.
My best D&D character was Walter Brandysnap, a halfling rat-catcher and cook, who talks like the Slingblade guy, and enjoys murdering Elves.
I once had a Stormbringer character who was a fat crippled simpleton from the Purple Towns. He killed a Pan Tangian Sorceror Noble with a garden rake.
My Vampire Clans alternate between Nosferatu and Toreador.
My Mage Traditions have been Verbena and Euthanatos
My Werewolf Tribes are Red Talons and Black Furies
I've always secretly wished that I could actually sing, and to play a Bard using that talent.
That outta do for now...

Actually Kevin, there is a LOT of info on the web describing the world of Warhammer Fantasy (try the Critical Hit site). I have never played a game of Warhammer Fantasy Battles. I am RPGer at heart. I finally found my generic system for my other fantasy (Dark Sun, Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk) and sci-fi (Dune, Traveller, WH40K, 2300AD) settings. I will be using the Interlock/Fuzion rules. Very easy to learn and use, plus I can create miles-long starships, transformable mecha, M1A1 Abrams tanks and psionic dragons! I can even use it for modern action (Superheroes, Twilight 2000).
Fuzion's cool. People bitch about it a lot, but if you have a campaign ready in your head, and you know what kind of rules you want and how you want to use them, Fuzion has them in there. Oh--and it's free. You can't beat the buy-in on that one. I like the simple-but-involved-enough-to-be-interesting dogfight rules. Dogfight rules are one of my litmus tests for games in which they are appropriate (which should be any game.)
Rorschach
03-14-2007, 05:24 PM
I have not heard of Fuzion before...I'll google them and check it out...
Hero and R. Talsorian spawned a bastard child, presumably a core set of rules with enough in common with the two systems to be easily converted one from the other. They posted the basics for free and released a slender, 56 pg. $8 rulebook. Games have been released using Fuzion as their core rules. How well the Fuzion book stands on its own is debatable. Some people hate it and feel like it took all the worst rules from the two host systems.
I'm the other camp. I'm a more campaign-oriented GM, rather than a system-oriented gamer. So I enjoying picking the chunks from the book I need for a particular setting and sewing them together. I like doing the same thing with most rules. I enjoy rules designed to be done that way--the generally lighter generic rules, like FUDGE, CORPs, Silhouette, Duel, the new HDL system--and on and on.
Fuzion's fun.
USMC2USAF
03-14-2007, 06:37 PM
Ahhh.. bastard children... reminds me of my single dating life in the not too distant past. But, I digress...
There might be an RPG campaign idea in there somewhere!

Actually I am campaign-oriented as well. I just did not want to play d20, and also I did not want to memorize 6-8 different systems. Fuzion reminds me of Interlock, which is very easy to learn and simple to port into other genres. I will try to use the best out of Fuzion, but I will play more like Interlock.

. . . and Lord of the Rings (once I can nail down those Decipher CODA rules).
If you decide to do this Damien, let me know.
Burning Wheel is great, and you might also look into TROS. I'm a fan of indie games anyway, but these are two of my favorites.
I've never played TROS, but I dig the Burning Wheel. I would love to do a sort of DragonStar-ish Fantasy-Scifi campaign using those rules. But I would want to take enough time to set it up well. And I really want to get the RuneQuest started, and some other stuff. But yeah-Burning Wheel is pretty awesome.

And I really want to get the RuneQuest started, and some other stuff. But yeah-Burning Wheel is pretty awesome.
Yeah, from what I can remember (it's been a long time since I picked up that old game) I liked RuneQuest, I'm just slightly leery of the Darth Vegas setting - doesn't sound (from what I can discern) like it would be my cup of tea.
Otherwise I might be tempted to join the game and get out of the house a little more often.
I'm just slightly leery of the Darth Vegas setting - doesn't sound (from what I can discern) like it would be my cup of tea.
It might not be. It's for anyone, but not for everyone, so to speak.
Darth Vegas was designed as a T&T play-by-post/convention-style setting. As such, I wanted all the familiar fantasy tropes (elves, trolls, runes, faeries, magic, skyships--that kinda stuff) alongside some more exotic, but fun, story elements (big heists, fugitives, a criminal underground, faerie rebellion, conspircy, betrayal of magic) in a carnival-like, Theives' World sort of setting, familiar but different (Fantasy Las Vegas). It's a juxtaposition that some folks find quaint and some find just wierd. But for the kind of loose, goofy atmosphere that in-shop games usually have, I figured it would be ideal. I'll post more about it in its own thread this week.
We're playing the new RQ, much like the old version, but a little more streamlined. Still quirky and cool. I think it's going to be a good alternative to D&D. With Lahnkmar and Elric coming out for RQ, I think it will prove versatile and, I hope, popular.
The Burning Wheel requires concentration to play. The interpersonal mechanics, both among characters and players, are pretty involved. I think it's a rich experience, but it might be hard to run in an open environment. I don't really know.
It sounds like we're drawing interest from a lot of really interested players right now. That's a little new. I want to see how it plays out. I have some logistical questions--where will we put the games? Will we be able to hear each other well? Will I have an electrical outlet so I can plug in my laptop and put my rules cheat sheets and maps and whatnot in a PowerPoint presentation? Will there be as many interuptions as I think there will? Will players be able to concentrate better than I think they will? Stuff like that. Nothing big--I know basically how things will go. But I want to get a feel for things with a game that would be a little more accommodating to inexperienced players than The Burning Wheel.
I'm excited about getting some open gaming going in the shop. When that feels solid, there are all kinds of things I want to try. But since I'm notorious for getting ahead of myself and distracted, I'm going to focus on the RQ and see what else we can get going gradually.
Incidentally, if I did line up a Burning Wheel in space game, I would go for something a little more fantasy than DragonStar, but a little grittier than Spelljammer. Would that appeal to folks?

I am avialable on fridays and weekends.
PM or Email me (jake90902@msn.com) for any groups or going ons. Tell me what I need to bring (like char. sheets, dice, and whatnot) and I'd be more then happy to see if I could get in on the fun.

Also= describe runequest to me. Wasnt it some kind of internet game?
You are thinking everquest for the internet game.
RuneQuest was a pencil and paper RPG that was put out by Chaosium games in the early 80's.
Or maybe RuneScape. It's a kids' MMORG. RuneQuest was one of the first really successful non-D&D fantasy rpgs.
We played it when I was in high school & college in the 80s. The first thing I noticed about it was that it was the first game I ever saw girls play. Others have noticed this phenomenon, but no one's ever explained it to my satisfaction. RQ is definately different than D&D, but not so much that it would make a huge difference, and certainly not in any way that seems to me like it would make a gender difference.
RQ uses characteristics similar to D&D to define characters, but it uses a percentile skill system, rather than classes and class abilities. The original system was steamlined a bt and evolved into the Basic Role-Playing System, used for other Chaosium games, such as Call of Cthulhu and Stormbringer. The primary setting for RQ was Glorantha, a great old mythic, exotic world. It was different and detailed and very rich. It's one of the best gaming environments devised. RQ branched into other worlds, which I thought were pretty cool, but RQ fandom was divided on.
The modern incarnation of RQ is a little different from the older ones, but not much. Hardcore fans are vocal in their ambivalence, but I like it a lot. It's quirky, but flexible. In addition to a very interesting "historical" Glorantha setting, RQ will power Lanhkmar, the home of Fafrd and the Grey Mouser, and the Eternal Champion realms, home of Elric, Corum, and Hawkmoon. These are some of my favorite settings, and I'm really happy to see them in print. RQ is going to be a good alternative to D&D.
I'm going to provide whatever's needed for the first few games--till flks decide whether they have a taste for it or not. I'll provide characters, and coaching for making your own. I'll bring sheets and some cheat sheets of some kind. Bring your lucky dice.

I noted the same phenomenon (female gamers) for DragonQuest, which SPI put out at the same time. I believe I got my first copy in 1980.
In fact, until recently I have never been in a game group that didn't have at least one woman - signs my luck is runining out I say.

Webb, here:
I *collect* RPG's more than I play them, mainly because my tastes are in character building and plots over campaigns and action:
Systems of choice for me are GURPS, d20 Modern, Shadowrun, and the White Wolf products; I just picked up SCION yesterday, and it looks cosmically encompassing. I am a book dealer by trade, or have been until recently, so being able to tie real world systems of knowledge - occult or scholastic - into a gaming session is a high priority for me. Grittier, thinking games are my forte.
I'd love to get a game of Dragonstar going (d20 Ad&D in space), as a campaign setting. It lends itself to the Modern Fantasy genre well, sort of like Shadowrun in space, and I'd dig getting a sci-fi dragon-led imperium up and running. I also do think the background could be used by any rules system, so GM-ing should be more of an attitude of cross-genre kick-assedness... er, to coin a term.
In any case, you should see more of me on the forums; I've been a part-time gamer, full-time pundit at the store for a couple of years now, tho my sorties are brief in nature. Please introduce yourself if we haven't met yet, as I hope everyone here or at the hard-copy Haven can do so to each other at any time.
Cheers, -- Webb

Would love to join when I return from my present adventure. I still have sweet memories of exploring the "Caves of Chaos" back in my D&D days. Never did finish searching all of them.
Hey Dale, have you ever heard of a game called "Knights and Magic"?

We are presently putting together charaters for a big Star Wars Saga Edition open campaign. It'll be fun, and a good place to meet the other roleplayers at the shop. See the "Stuwars" thread Jason started in Stu's Asylum. It's not just my campaign, though, so it won't be too wierd. ;)

Rifts! Experienced, mature playa... well... not like I act like it :)
Rifts! Man, if you would run that at the shop, my son would play in a heartbeat. He's been wanting to combine character creation from Nightspawn and Ninjas and Superspies and make a monsters kick ass game. He just stares at Rifts. In awe of teh kewl, I guess.
Anyone still play TMNT?

WHAT? You're lookin' at a guy that loooves ninjas and superspies! and TMNT!
s'why i got into Rifts (and specifically Rifts Japan), the TMNT dodge bonuses got a little crazy, and the superspies got a little weird on the high powered stuff. Rifts is a nice almagam of the two systems (written by Erik Wijuck also), that takes the ridiculous bonuses out of the equation, and adds MDC. i feel it's the best way to play a campaign like that.
i'm gonna call Vry2k and try to get something going, I'd easily GM a Rifts: Japan campaign... perhaps in the near future... :)
