Apparently, Emporer's Choice Games will soon release a brand spankin' new version of the Arduin rules. They say they will be soliciting playtesters this weekend, at the forums at Arduin.com, and I was curious to see if anyone would be interested.

I haven't playtested stuff for a few years, but I enjoyed it when I did it. I definately think we could assemble just the sort of drunken, irascible, hyper-critical piss tank required for the final polish of a rules set.

Back in the wierd old days, Dave Hargrave, a veteran hobby shop owner in sunny Califronia, played D&D like a fiend and eventually published his house rules and campaign notes into a barely-legible, incoherent mess that was indisputably the best rpg product of all time. It was essentially a D&D bolt-on before people knew they couldn't do that. The "system" was revised once, into a somewhat more coherent package--presumably less derivative of D&D. Still fun and unabashedly complicated, Arduin continued to appeal to "hardcore" gamers. The new rules have been produced by protoges of Dave Hargrave's, who played wth him back then, and never really stopped. I don't know what the new rules are going to be like. I hope they aren't too slick. That would be like Jefferson Airplane becoming Starship. But it will be fun to have Arduin on shelves again.

If there is interest, I will try to sign up for a playtest package.

Edit 3/2: They posted the applications. The window for submitting applications is pretty narrow. If you're interested, let me know right away. I'll go get a keg . . .

Wow, I used to love Arduin Grimiore.

It's ahrd to beleive they are coming up with an updated version.

Depending on when you want to meet to do this, I could be interested.

I haven't worked out any of those details yet. Doing an official playtest is slightly (but only slightly) more challenging than assembling a casual group, because of the paperwork. You have to get non-disclosures from everyone, report your results and comments, note any text errors, etc etc.

So--I don't want to bother if there's no interest. However--I would get a huge kick out of contributing, even in a minor way, to something I've loved for 27 years.

I think if I can get 6-8 players intersted (3-5 more) then I bet we could figure out some creative solutions to any scheduling conflicts that come up.

Well,

I haven't done any playtest since I wrote my article for the Riddle of Steel Companion, but if you can get enough people, count me in.

We have four. That seems a little sparse, since we haven't talked times and whatnot. If we can get three or four more, that would probably be better. I've called my first wave of folks. I'm brainstorming the second wave. If there's anyone you'd like to bring on, shoot them my e-mail and we'll get rockin.
