I played 40k for a few years, and have been out of it just as long. Now, the minis and the availability of games has me taking a long look at Hordes. If I take the plunge, I'll be playing Skorne. The Basilisks and Titans look very cool. The main features attracting me to the game are the beasts. I'm not so interested in infantry troops. Also, I enjoy more skirmish style battles. So I have a few questions.

Can one play competitively (by this I mean win as much as lose) fielding little to no infantry?

Can one play competitively for under $100? Obviously would get the warpack, and am interested in a Krea and Drake. But not much more than that, especially at first.

Are smaller point value games easy to come by? What is commonly played at the Haven?

Most of the games we play are 500 then 750. 750 is a bit more populr with Warmachine as it allows the use of Epic Warcasters (each faction except Mercs currently have 3).

A battlebox + krea + drake = 431 points

You will probably want to get another heavy and warcaster to swap out with one of the cyclops brutes. I am not a skorne player so I think someone would have to add advice for which to pick.

There are also two tourneys at Gamer' haven next month, first is for new players and is only a battlebox tourney and the second is a 350 point tourney which is little more than a battle box (approx 280).

I would also consider adding swamp gobbers. They work for anyone and add a nice Def cloud to stand in, or completely block LOS against shooting enemies except the Legion Seraph.

Welcome Fishman!

Folks will be around a lot gaming on Thursdays, if you want to catch myself or Ryan for a spiel on the game, or even a demo.
There'll be a mini-Tourney, just for new players, using only box sets, on Saturday, June 9th.

As for Skorne, yes, you can go beast-heavy. Not as easily as Legion can, but if you at least get a unit of Paingivers to help with Fury management, it can work. Personally, I like to take about 4 beasts - often a Gladiator, Cannoneer, Krea, and Drake in 750 games. In 500, I always take some infantry, usually Cetrati. As you play you'll find you WANT more infantry.
