I am looking for one or more learning games in the next few days @ 500 points prior to the start of the WFB escalation league. I haven't played WFB in umm... years so I'm mostly just looking for a few games to get used to the current rules (especially the close combat and terrain changes).

I'll be playing Dark Elves in some form or another and will bring a few different army configurations so than, time depending (I really don't know how long a "learning" game will take), I can try out a few different troop types (cavalry, flyers, scouts, warmachines).

Pettigrew? (forgive if I mispelled)

This is Dane.
Like you, I haven't played the game in several years. I'm interested in learning games, though we can't really help each other out. I have a copy of the rules though, and I can play at odd times. Maybe after we get familiarized with new rules, we can help each other out.

Yes, Pettigrew (you got it right!). Depending on responses, we could also just meet up and muddle through (and there is usually someone around we can bug when we get stuck/confused). I've got a copy of the rule book as well and have read though it a couple times now but there is a difference between seeing and doing (for me at least) so any "table time" is well worth it.

Well, I haven't even read the rules, so you're ahead of me. And I don't know what the limits are for escalation cadres, but I'm sure I can find it easily enough (is it in one of them there books I have around the house, or is it online?). One problem is that I don't have the lizardmen new army book, though I have a lot of lizardmen to choose from. I also have high elves, but most are unpainted, though in the HE case I do have the most recent army book. I can probably generate a LM list fairly easily with some help, though.

I can play about any time between Saturday and Tuesday, but Saturday is the least preferable option (because I'd have to cancel some existing tasks on the honeydo list, and that requires a saving throw; it could be done, however). Sunday looks good, although I don't know how busy it is in the store with Flames of War competition for tables. And I'm available Monday and Tuesday, but would prefer a day game to an evening game. I'll be driving down from Denver (where I now live) so I'd prefer to be doing that drive down (when the traffic is heaviest) before 4 p.m. Sunday and Monday are preferable to Saturday/Tuesday. Tuesday night I want to try to play something at Attactix in the Denver area.

Why don't we plan for Monday around noon then (we can do earlier/later at your preference - store opens @ 11)? That will give me time to at least get primer up on my stuff! Dark Elves are a brand new army for me so everything is still in assembly stages with plans to start the real "work" of painting next week.

The escalation league is just a build and paint over time collection/play drive. There is a thread in the main WFB section but essentially start @ 500pts 1 June and then add 500 points every two weeks through August. The goal (in addition to just drumming up players) is that you paint the army as you collect it and end the league with a fully painted force of (I think) 3k points. If you are interested/have time/inclination it might be a great incentive to work on the high elves. That said, as far as I know, army composition rules are just the normal ones from the rule book (max 25% lords, heroes, rares, max 50% specials, min 25% core).

Monday at noon is good for me.
See you then.
Looking forward to it.
Hopefully we can play a few little games in the time we have.

I can't play in the full escalation league, though; I can't drive down there that often because gas prices are high and I'm unemployed, and more importantly, I paint slowly, and there's no way I can finish a HE army in the time allotted.

I'm getting involved in a 40K escalation league at Attactix over the same period; gotta meet new players up here.

Monday is Memorial Day. Do we know if the store is going to be open?

I am interested in checking out the rules so I'll come and watch. Plus, I haven't seen Dave in forever.

HAHA! I didn't even think about Monday being a holiday. (Retirement does that to you.) I'll call the store tomorrow to double check that they are going to be open, but assuming they will be, I'll see you both then.

We will be up to GH on Monday, May 30 in order to practice some and hopefully get some insight into ho the game is played. We are totally new.

We will probably be up there around 3pm.

Hey Dave, I was just reading the High Elf FAQ, and I have some disturbing news for you:
Swordmasters of Hoeth will always strike first regardless of the great weapon. Speed of Asuryan takes precedence over the "Always Strikes Last" rulebook rule for Great Weapons...
Take that you overpowered Cold One cavalry!

<whimper><cry> I also found an update on panic caused causalities due to terrain. You run away from the RIVER OF DOOM! (or other offending terrain piece).

Thanks everyone for coming by yesterday. I had a great time and learned (learnt in GW speak) alot.

P.S. Nerf high elves who thanks to that always strike first thing have better hatred than dark elves.

Was there some doubt as to that? It's in the HE Army Book, too.

Here's more fun for us High Elf players: per the FAQ, Martial Prowess now grants an additional fighting rank (not a 2nd or third depending on combat, as written in the army book); further, all units get to use their 2nd ranks, spears grant an additional rank, and Mob rule allows yet an additional rank! So, a High Elf spear unit 10 wide by 5 deep get 51 attacks (49 troopers @ 1 each + Champ @ 2) PLUS get to Strike First from "Speed of Asuryan" -AND- reroll misses against anyone with lower Init!

Yes, behold the Power of Cheese! And ya'll thought my Eldar were broken...

Well, with two guys playing the new rules for the first time, we thought Speed of Asuryan +GW would be treated as the book says (always strikes first + always strikes last = strike at initiative point), since the rules were newer than the HE army book.

Yeah, really glad that the last army I bought was High Elves!
I'm not sure how well lizardmen will do in this new system though with their horrible initiative. Maybe Toughness 4 will be a big compensation, I don't know.

T4 with the savage fighter rule, so a unit of 15 with spears = 11 attacks from the front (4 troops @ 1 + Champ @ 2 + 5 bites) + 5 from rank 2 + 5 from spears/additional rank = 21 attacks of ouch. That and the Kroxigors getting Stomp! and the stegadon getting Thunderstomp!, plus all sorts of geechie nuanced rules for the rest of the lizzies. Glee!
