Hmmmm...It's been a while since I had a dreadnought. Is it plastic or pewter? If it's plastic then I'd go get some plastic cement (airplane glue). It's 98 cents, you can't beat it. If it's pewter I'd run on down to the nearest Target (because Wal-Mart is the Anti-Christ) and buy the dirt cheap super glue. Kicker would definitely help there too.

1. Scrub all the pieces with an old toothbrush, hand soap, and warm water. It will make a world of difference.
2. Some kind of gap filler is also your friend when gluing pewter to pewter. GW greenstuff works just fine for this, but it is a little more expensive than a generic. Using it can be somewhat challenging for a beginner.
3. Pin your pieces.

I wash all of my models off with Castrol SuperClean (big purple bottle). Usually soak them overnight. That cleans off all of the casting residue, which is probably your issue.

For Glue, I use Zap-a-Gap, in the green bottle. Works great for metal and plastic. My experience with the airplane glue in the metal tube is that its too thick, and generic super glue doesnt hold well. Thats just my experience.

I use Testor's precision cement (black bottle, long thin spout) for all plastic models. It is thinner than the tube stuff and the narrow tip makes it very easy to control. For any kind of metal, I use 5 min epoxy (the bottles, not the syringe) and pin the pieces. It takes a lot of time and effort, but I never have to glue anything a second time. Superglue has no shear strength, so it will break eventually as you transport your figs. Kicker only makes the problem worse.

I have heard very good things about that percision cement for plastics. I am just hesitant to change.. but I might when I start putting my Tau together.

I tend to pin any sort of large models that are not built to fit together. Dreadnoughts have those little nubs that the arms fit on, so that you dont need to pin.. it basicly does it on its own.
