Interesting list:

I disagree here and there, but I am secretly delighted STAR WARS appears no where on the list (probably because the only worthy entries are over 25 yrs old)

Interesting list.

Star Wars Clone Wars is Number 20.

And I agree it deserves to be there... awesome.

I should have clarified my previous - I'm glad none of the Prequels were there. CLONE WARS totally deserves it, and I love how they specifically shout out the 2nd season!

I agree with most of these, and to be honest I just do not get the hatred for Star Wars, even the 1-3 episodes. They may not be the greatest story writing of all time, but it's better than some of the other B movies that people here seem to worship.

But I agree when looking at that list, only Return of the Jedi deserves even being considered.

Of course Buckaroo Banzai should also be on there....

Eh, i disagree with most of this list, but whatever.

Oh dear sweet God.....It was going alright until I saw #1. There's at least 6 or 7 that are better on that very list.

It doesn't even belong on that list. Ugh! What is it with people?

And V? What?!

Its not really a secret anymore is it, Dale?

I'm kinda surprised Babylon 5 wasn't on there. It was a great show loved every episode.

I agree, Babylon 5 was a great show.

Interesting list, some I agree with, some I don't

I am also very disappointed Babylon 5 was not on there. And that invalidates the list in my opinion.

Pilgrim

Yeah B5 is pretty epic and probably deserves a spot!

Rorschach

Now that you guys mention B5, I have to agree. I was already annoyed Firefly wasn't higher up, and that DS9 didn't get a mention separate from TNG.

Also missing is FARSCAPE.

So screw that list...

I think this list made the mistake of mixing TV series comparisons with movie comparisons.

TV series have a lot more time to develop rich stories and intriguing plot lines, where a movie either has to depend on either assumed audiance knowledge or condensed back story.

Great movies can tell a story well in its alotted time, but I don't know if you can compare them to a series.

Hmm only reasoning I can think of is that most of the stuff is mainstream IE if it only existed on cable then it didn't count... only way I can reason the logic behind some of the picks

papaThunder

BSG only exists on cable...

You gotta wonder how they pick that list, though. Did they do a survey? Or did they just sit around a table with pizza and beer talking about what was cool, and someone took notes...

We should make our own top 25 Sci-Fi list!

Then invent a magazine to publish it in!

papaThunder
05-08-2007, 08:39 AM
I guess we should start with what is on the list that does not belong, and what is not on the list that should be there...

As for magazines, we need a catchy name.

Pilgrim
05-08-2007, 08:42 AM
"The magazine Dedicated to GamersHaven top 25 Sci-fi list!"

Although that's kinda giving it all away...

papaThunder

No, no, more mysterious. We want people to buy this magazine and go, "oh crap, I just wasted my money cuz the title tricked me into thinking the mag was cool!"

How about SCIENCE PORN ?

or perhaps a men's mag tack, and call it RUTT

Other ideas:
SPACE STATION JUSTICE
ALL YOUR BASE
SNAKE EYES
MAGIC MONKEY
INTEROCITER
SMARTRON
IT AIN'T COOL
TOASTER
MOSS GATHERING
NERFHERDER
10 FOOT POLE
SAVING THROW

Well as for magazine name I liked

"All your base" and "magic lantern", the rest are more for roleplaying...

Here some others

Plasma Monkey Wrench
The Red Button
Astrioids for Hire
The Next ...

Now for the good part top 25... in no particular order

Babylon 5
Star Trek TNG
Aliens
Blade runner
Battlestar galactica (New one)
Firefly and or serenity
Terminator 2
Split second
Demolition Man
5th Element
Quantom leam
SG1
Pitch black
Preditor (The first one)
Ghost in the Shell (Animated I know but still awsome)

If we are putting Demo Man in, we need to add Judge Dread!!!!

Anyway, a worthy addition IMO would be The Minority Report. I enjoyed Spielbergs vision of the future.

Total Recal and ST II still remain firmly near the top of my list.

The Last Starfighter! Man that movie was awesome! (When I was 8)

The Running Man! Butcher of Bakersfield all the way.

If we are introducing Anime into the list, then you gotta have Cowboy Beebop in there somewhere.

Hmmm, I think this list is gonna end up being more than 25 items and be more like, "The top bunch of reasons why I would rather not be at work right now."

Hey--what gives?

I can't make it through more than the first five or so entries on the list without my computer seizing up. Does EW traffic in nuisance-ware or spybots or whatnot? All I can say is that while I'm glad Quantum Leap was on a "Best of" list, it's not really science fiction. It's more "Magical Realism" like Early Edition or something. That's a rookie error.

Further, from comments, it seems like this is another one of those lists that confuses "Best of" with "A Bunch of Stuff Our Readership Will Have Already Heard Of." Another rookie error. Like whoever that dude is that picks the "Best of" albums for bands.

I dig the speculation surrounding a title for a Gamers Haven Zine.
I like Moebius Dick's Amazing Science Superstories.

He's the sometimes-friend, sometimes-rival of our intrepid pulp hero, Captain Heavy Johnson.

At any rate, these types of magazines always have to have some sort of mascot to tie the various issues together, even if they don't fit thematically. That's right up MD's alley.
