View Full Version : Are hex & chit wargames boardgames, now?
I picked up Lensman the other day, and was reminded that hex & chit space games are one of my favorite of all kinds of games. I know that even in a niche of nerds, they're considered exceptionally nerdy, right up there with train games and Starfleet Battles. But well. There you go. I knows what I likes. Don't try to get me, baby.
Does anyone else have the time/energy/stamina to play these sorts of games?

I do! I need to find opponents for BATTLES OF WESTEROS...
Is BoW pretty fun? Isn't it Ice and Fire BattleLore? I like BattleLore.

I'm a fan of the Avalon Hill type chit and counter games as well, Stu. Although for games like Federation Commander, I can't help but replace the counters with miniatures instead! Especially when I'm playing a squadron level scenario. I've also found that the block counter games like Europe Engulfed is also very engaging as well.

I like these kinds of games and would be happy to play them with folks. I own Hold the line and Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear, both of which are awesome hex and chit games.

It's like Battlelore, but better.

Hey Ed,
We need to play CoH: AtB. I should have it this week and have downloaded the SoS rules, as they are what the creator recommends to use for the game now. I don't have a free night this week, but maybe we can set up a time to play in Jan.

Sounds good to me. I will have to check out the SoS rules, as I was unaware those are the recommended ones. But I would be happy to play you.

Apparently SoS has updated them. Then the Poland expansion has updated counters for AtB included. I've been reading up about the game on BGG and the creator makes frequent comments about the game and rules.

How about sometime the week of the tenth? what day works for you?

Tuesday or Thursday that week should work fine for me. After 6. I have the updated rules printed out (www.academy-games.com). The game creator said to use either the SoS or PoH rule set as they include all the updates. I'd love to start walking through the scenarios and rules. Maybe we can set up a game time once a month to play?

Sounds good, lets tentatively go through the first scenario or two on Tuesday, then, that way I don't have to read too many new rules!
That work for you?

Tuesday the 11th at 6? I will double check with the wife and post back for sure before the end of the night. Do you want to use the revised SoS/PoH rules?

Hey Ed,
Next Thursday, the 20th, works out great. The girls are spending the night with my mom so I have the whole evening.
I posted up the question about pivoting and cowering. Should have an answer by tomorrow is my guess, though the more I think about it, the more I think we did it right.

We played it correctly. Pivot is not movement, not affected by terrain, or cowering.

Yep. If me and Ed can get some frequency in playing at the store, maybe we can pull in some others to play as well. Would definitely play with Troy!

Hey Ed,
Two things we missed last night.
1. When making a rally attempt in cover terrain (anything that grants a +1 DV) you get a +1 to the roll.
2. When firing into a hex with multiple units, you roll to hit each of them.

Played FF #1 with the wife today. She Germans, I Soviets. She won 7 VP to 5. Plus, I think she actually liked it enough to play again!
I managed to get all the counters into the tray system of PoH. The rules, tracking sheets, reference sheets, and firefights from all three sets (after printing the 8.5x11" set) all fit as well. Finally, at least two maps will fit as well, so I can throw in the ones being used for the FF and have everything in one box.
I'm happy.

Tuesday's and Thursday's I drop Deeann off at 5 and pick her up at 7:15 at the Downtown PPCC campus. We could play at the library or your place if your open to it. I could do this probably ever other week currently on either day.
Next Sat. (12th) noon to 4 could work and Sunday (13th) noon -1:30.
