View Full Version : GH Best of The Springs

The Independent annually puts out a "Best of . . . " issue, rating hundreds of Springs locations in dozens and dozens of categories. I think we should do the same thing, continually, as an ongoing evaluation of Colo Spgs from the unique mixture of varied points of view represented on the board. I think there's a lot of experience represented here.

Few rules--you can invent any category you like. You may only rate locations from Colo Spgs, Manitou, Security, Fountain, even Pueblo--but not Denver--they have their own scene--and not as far away as Buena Vista or Salida, unless you're doing and odd category like "Best 1/2 Day Rafting Excursion" or whatnot. You have to rank locations with no ties, you your list can be as long as you like. And, finally, if you have some personal trait that may affect your bias, please indicate what that is. I'll start:

Best Mexican Food:

1. The Loop (Manitou Springs)--If I don't get a Cancun chimi and s Black Orchid margarita every two to three months, I suffer from acute depression. The Loop is small, but warm, with wood floors, a fireplace, ample window exposure to the street for watching passers-by, and a reasonable bar. When they screw up someone else's margarita order, they bring it to me. The Loop is the bomb.

2. Heni's (Old Colorado City)--Henri's also serves a wide variety of excellent margaritas. The regular menu is more traditional than The Loop's, with less of a Baja/Tex-Mex bias.

3. Senor Manuel's (Nevada and Austin Bluffs)--Senor Manuel's apparently has more of a New Mexico-style menu. The dishes are rich, with more slow-cooking evident.

4. La Casita, multiple locations--If I were doing a separate "cafeteria" category (which I might do) La Casita would win hands down. The reason it's three in the "restaurant" category is the highly informal atmosphere and presentation. The food at La Casita is light, fresh, and fast. All the locations serve beer if you want one and have a patio for civilized seating.

5. Jose Muldoon's (downtown)--I hate the downtown scene, but Muldoon's has good food, passable margaritas, a reasonable Happy Hour, and both an open patio in the front (In warm weather) and an enclosed courtyardesque patio in the back. It is chock full of schoolteachers on Friday afternoons, but sometimes I eat there anyway . . .

6. Navajo Hogan (central)--very good nachos. Fantastic ambiance. I'd rather drink there than eat, but it's not really a bar.

Best Cinema Venue:

1. The Mesa Drive-In (Pueblo)--This isn't the only drive-in in the state, but it's the easiest to get to. All the drive-in advantages, with no unexpected disadvantages. Spray yourself down with mosquito repellent--people forget that.

2. The Peak (downtown)--Again, I hate the downtown scene, but this is a decent arthouse venue, where you can sit down with some adult refreshments and enjoy a show. I wish they'd show Wizards and Repo Man at midight, but I guess you can't have everything . . .

3. Fine Arts Center movies (downtown)--they don't do this regularly, but when they do, it's cool.

4. Movies on the Quad (CC)--or whatever CC calls their lawn chair movie series.

5. The Imax (Powers)--You can't beat a four-story screen, and I like the semi-educational films they show.

I can't bring myself to give the Carmikes or the dollar movies a number. I don't like seeing movies in places like that. I wish we had a little more variety in town.

Best Purveyer of Adult Beverages:

1. Thunder and Buttons (Old Colorado City)--T&B is a great place to have a beer, a sandwich, and to simply sit still on the patio and enjoy the laid-back west side ambiance. I almost consider it a sister site to Meadow Muffins, which I also enjoy, but which doesn't have a patio, doesn't serve quite as good food, and which can become choked up with kids.

2. The Townhouse (Manitou)--The Town house is the best place I know to have a beer, a sandwich, and to simply sit still on the patio and enjoy the laid-back Manitou ambiance.

3. The Ancient Mariner (Manitou)--No patio, but still heaps of hippie ambiance, and sometimes you can find some . . . conversation.

4. O'Furry's (central)--Great atmosphere, outdoor volleyball, decent music, lots of . . . conversation. This joint's related to Meadow Muffin's, but seems more laid-back.

5. Jack Quinn's (downtown)--Fun, pub-like place.

I don't like Old Chicago's, or any other kind of resteraunt that tries to masquerade as a bar. I don't like any of the Houlihan McFriday's--style chain joints.

Best Pizza:

1. The Do-Drop Inn (Pueblo)--It takes a long time to get your order here, but it's worth it.

2. Leon Gessi's. (central)--Good, unpretentious pizza. BJ's Velvet Freeze is around the corner, if you'd like some dessert.

Best Patio:

1. The Townhouse
2. Ted and Sully's
3. The 21st Street Tavern

Best Jukebox:

1. The Point
2. The Mill Hill Tavern
3. Tony's
4. The Dutch Mill (also, best cheeseburger)

Clearly, many of my selections demonstrate the fact that I'm a little older, not single-mindedly in search of . . . conversation, and typically enjoy being outside, perfecting the only two areas of expertise I have: sitting very still, and drinking beer.

I'm looking forward to what different people would suggest, and to see people's suggestions in different categories, ie: best place to buy books, music, videos, etc, best videogames, best secondhand shop, best chicken wings, best micro-brew, best pool tables, best bowling, etc etc etc etc.

Best Place to take little kids
1. Mr. Bigg's: A variety of things to do, and monitored enough so parents can relax some.

2. Chapel Hills Mall play area: Normally a total mad house on the weekends, but still monitored enough and enough parents around that parents can relax a little from the usual total vigilance that playgrounds require. Plus there is usually a fair amount of Eye Candy, and if there are 2 parents you can tag team shop.

3. The Zoo: Lots of variety, good exercise for parents and children, reasonably priced. And enough walking that by the end of the trip the little ones will usually pass out in the car on the way home.

Best place to eat lots of meat
1. Sheldon's Luncheonette: 2 locations, North Nevada and 8th Street. Their Jumbo Burger is a good 3/4 pounds of meat, and their full order of fries is too much for any one person. And their open face sandwiches, especially the Thursday and Friday Turkey days are also an excellent feast.

I have to agree with Stu on Leon Gessi's for pizza. Good stuff!

Best place to buy video games
1. Game Crazy on Academy Blvd. near Constitution.
The guys here are genuinely friendly and helpful. They have a wondrous selection of used PS games as well.

Best General Autoshop:

Cooper Automotive. Good, fast, a bunch of scary looking biker dudes, what more can you want from an auto shop!

Hear, hear, Cooper Automotive. In a world where mechanics can be real crooks, these guys are awesome. Only chrage you for what is wrong and what they worked on. Relaible, honest.

Okay, I'll throw in :-)

Best Mexican Food = Gotta go with Stu's list, except to add Best FAST Mexican Food is the Burrito Express on South Circle, before Fountain.

Best Cinema Venue:
Again, I can't argue with the connoisseur picks, but if you want a "standard" place to see your standard films, go to Tinseltown. They get weird films on occasion, and are much cooler than the one on Powers. They also support the Met Opera series (http://www.fathomevents.com/details.aspx?seriesid=610 )

Best Purveyer of Adult Beverages:

1. The Ancient Mariner
2. 15C - The only real martini and cigar bar in town.
3. Jack Quinn's
4. The Underground (downtown) - still carrying the alternative banner now and then. Great patio, and lots of nooks and crannies.
5. Thunder and Buttons

Best Pizza:
1 and Only. Leon Gessi's.
Is there any other real independent pizza place left?

Best Patio:
1. Adam's Mountain Cafe, now in the Manitou Spa

Best Used Books
1) Poor Richards still has the best stuff in dark corners
2) Book Broker is a close second
3) The Book Sleuth is fantastic for Mysteries of all sorts, new and used
4) Hooked on Books, on Maizeland

Best Restaurants for a Date
1) Blue Star
2) Craftwood Inn
3) Stagecoach Inn
4) Mobo Sushi
5) Jack Quinn's

Best Tattoo Shops
1) HeeBee JeeBees (of course!)
2) Holey Rollers
3) Art in Motion
4) West Side Tattoo
5) Snake's
Do NOT go to FREAKY'S

Oh yeah Best Mechanic -- AUTOHOUSE on Platte - as honest as the day is long...

Hmmm...I'm running out of opinions...I just don't get out like I used to.

Adding to best restaurants for a Date
The Melting Pot: excellent food, variety of food, very intimate.

And a second for HeeBee JeeBee's.

Best place to drop $100+ on a dinner for 2.

The Mona Lisa: Nice atmosphere, and fondue always impresses the chicks. Wiht a bottle of wine, this will crest over $100 but not by too much. The Melting pot is ok... but I prefer Rocklette style fondue over dip and boil, but that's a personal preference, both are good.

The Penrose Room: Prepare to spend the coinage! But this is one of those places where you get what oyu pay for. Excellent food, and if you ask nicely you can get members of the staff to fight to the death for your entertainment.

The CliffHouse: Very nice, good food. Another good Ambiance place.

Best Italian Joint

Antonios on Garden of the Gods. Had my Rehearsal dinner there. Very good food, and very reasonable prices.

I have to add Red Rocks Auto Clinic to the best mechanics category. After all, where else can you get your car's problem diagnosed by a guy named Zoltan.

Best Date:
1. Saturday--pick her up late in the morning for a run through the Colorado Springs Flea Market. Snack on funnel cakes and RC Cola. Refresh your suncreen and run down to the Pueblo Riverwalk. Early dinner at the Do-Drop Inn and a double feature at the Mesa Drive-In. Sober up during the second feature and get her back up to the Springs by 2:00, so she's not too sleepy for church.

Best Sunday Morning Breakfast Buffet:
1. The Manitou Steak and Pancake House.

BEST THAI PLACE- Little Bangkok. Right behind Josh and Jon's next to the Peak theatre.

They closed down. There's a new mexican restaurant there, Alice's something or another. I tried it out and was disappointed. The food was really bland.

Speaking of Mexican food, my favorite by far is Amanda's Fonda on the westside. I used to eat a lot at Henri's. Amanda's Fonda blew them away.

It's kind of pointless to debate rankings, so I'll throw out a few more additions.

Best Purveyer of Adult Beverages:

Judge Baldwins - This is in the Antlers Hotel. Clean, usually quiet, and killer happy hour microbrews.

Murphy's Tavern - wins my vote for best dive bar.

and with Best Patio I'll throw a vote in for Shuga’s

Best new Cafe I've run into: Dogtooth Cafe. Free wifi, centrally located, good menu, and good coffee. I ate their today and really enjoyed myself.

Best French Food: La Baguette - great cafe, in downtown and the westside, sandwich croissants are the best.

Best cheap ass theater: Carmike 10 on Pulsar. It's a little older than the tinseltown or the Cinemark, and a lot more old school. They've got the lowest prices on movies ($4.50 matinees, $5.50 regular). Kimball's downtown will always have my vote for best theater, but if it's not showing there, I try to catch it at the Pulsar. The main advantage of this theater is that it's pretty much abandoned 4 days a week. It's really an urban theater, which gets over run by kids on the weekends. My biggest complaint for watching movies at most theaters is that you're guaranteed someone kicking your chair, sitting in front of you, or talking on their cell phone. I get so irritated with other people in the audience that it can ruin the movie for me. At the Pulsar, as long as it's not the opening weekend you can usually guarantee being one of only a handful of people if you go on a week night or matinee. I saw Grindhouse with three other people last week. That was all that was in the theater. We all laughed and had a good time, but no one obnoxiously made an ass out of themselves. That allows me to watch a movie, and that's why I like this place.

Best Chinese food: China Village Restaurant - I usually can't go more than a couple weeks without getting a lunch order of their sesame chicken. Good stuff.

Best Vietnamese Food:
1. Saigon Grill - cheap, tasty, and not too busy. Their rice paper appetizers are my favorite.

2. Saigon Cafe - A little tastier, a lot more expensive, and a lot busier, but definitely worth the nod.

Best Local Pizza:

Borriello Brothers Pizza near Palmer high is good. Poor Richard’s is pretty good too. I'm definitely going to give Leon Gessi's a try - maybe tomorrow even :D

Best Breakfast after a Pub Crawl:

1. Bon Ton Cafe - Nothing like a local homestyle grease infusion.

Best Art Galleries:
1. Smokebrush Gallery
2. Fine Art Center (Go ahead and get a membership. If you go more than a few times a year, it's worth it)
3. Business of Art Center in Manitou
4. Tri-lakes Art gallery
5. Common wheel art center

I go into withdrawal without french onion soup from La Baguette. The patio, virtually shared with T&B's, should've gone on my best patio list.

I've been there and enjoyed it, but since it was converted to "stadium seating" from an old theater, it feels more like I'm sitting in front of someone's big screen TV sometimes. I usually hit Tinseltown or Cinemark right after work for the last matinee, and almost never have problems with movie-goers. Cause at that time, people WANT to be there and see the movie.

Best Chinese food: China Village Restaurant - I usually can't go more than a couple weeks without getting a lunch order of their sesame chicken. Good stuff.

Amen, Brother! Their Volcano is also a great date drink. :-)

Best Breakfast after a Pub Crawl:
1. King Chef!!!! Hottest green chili in the Known Universe
http://www.belizenorth.com/king_chef_diner.htm

Best Art Galleries:
I must also point out that Heebee Jeebees is now an Art Gallery as well. And since nothing goes up there without meeting Karen's standards, you're guaranteed to find something interesting there.

Man is this true.

That last Matinee is great. Either that or the first showing of the day.

Between then you will get some parents dropping off their kids so they don't have to deal with them.

Thanks for the tips guys. I guess my preferences have more to do with timing than they do with location. I'll check out one of those for a matinée sometime, sans holes in the theater screen no less.

You know, I heard about some sort of interesting exhibit going up there. When are they open Dale? I'll have to check them out with my girlfriend (Art galleries BTW make for a great, interesting, and inexpensive date out).

Noon to 7PM are the usual hours, but they vary on either end depending on when Jeff or Karen can get in, or if they get a late customer. Bad weather days they sometimes close early.
